Clouds on ceilings have been around since, well.....ceilings.   There are famous atmospheric ceilings throughout history that have charmed viewers.   Used in the right environment cloud ceilings can be a perfect addition.  They need not be overdone, they can be subtle and effective.  In my opinion, cloud ceilings are best viewed when the ceiling height is at least 9ft with 12 ft plus being optimum.  You need to have a certain amount of visible sky within your peripheral vision in order for the illusion to fool the eye.  If the ceiling is too close you do not have an effective sense of perspective to enjoy them fully.

In reality the sky is a fantastic place where every imaginable color, shape and texture can be found.  Your painted ceiling need not be the traditional "white puffy" clouds.  Explore books, magazines, calendars and of course your own sky for inspiration.  Some skies are simple enough for the "do it yourselfer", yet others require the hand of an artist.
